Have you noticed how frequently our greetings to friends include a comment on the weather? Lately, we’ve been commenting on how early the spring flower buds are showing. We know these changes happen year after year, but each time we see the first little hint, we get so excited. It’s the same with our children and students. Don’t we get excited when we realize there’s a new measure of competence and maturity in some little statement, action or reaction! As teachers, we reflect on the children we met last September, and enjoy the many signs of growth. With the younger students, we see increasing awareness of others. For example, younger children often start school not really paying attention to others in the room. (This may be a good thing when we have a child crying from separation anxiety! Rather than a room erupting into tears, the others usually just go right on playing.) But this last week, when a child became tearfully upset over an issue with another child, many of the uninvolved classmates came right over and made a little circle around the two and the teacher and showed support for the upset children. Our older students are also growing. If you compare their sharing stories from the beginning of the year to now, you’ll find more details, more varied vocabulary words, and more legible signatures. When we get into April and re-create life in the tiny Bering Sea village where Retha previously |
