Parents need to carefully consider their children's learning styles and developmental stages when choosing classes. For instance, an older child may be less mature than some younger ones or an easily distractible child may find a large class over stimulating. On the other hand, a social, adventurous child may do better in a larger group with more activity choices. Rather than just looking at the oldest class possible, consider whether your child might gain more from being one of the older students in the slightly younger class. The most important consideration should be your child's needs.

Little Friends

Little Friends offers two classes, one meeting twice a week and one meeting three times a week. The M-W-F class is slightly older than the T-Th class.

The T-Th class is specifically designed for younger children (30 mo - 3½ in the fall) who are undergoing the transition between the almost total dependence of home to the relative independence of a preschooler.

We try to nourish the physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth of each child in an enticing environment of self-discovery. We endeavor to provide the young preschoolers a continuity with familiar activities of the past and present and an introduction to new experiences. Social skills are emphasized. Hands-on activities provide developmentally appropriate pre-reading, pre-math, science and literacy experiences.

The class’ teacher provides a warm and caring atmosphere to welcome children to their first school experience.

Every week there is a new theme in the classroom.  Check out the T-Th class page to see what is going on in this class.

The M-W-F class is designed for 3 to 4½ year olds who are growing more adventuresome.  Children must be completely potty-trained.

This is an age where children are still relatively "me-centered", so one goal is to help the students become more aware of others' feelings and needs. We also work on ways children can effectively express their own feelings and needs The low adult to child ratio helps maintain a positive atmosphere as we work on these goals.

Compared to the T-TH class, the M-W-F class features more independent activities, more decision-making by the students, activities to encourage group participation, and some family participation field trips. We try to engage the children's "multiple intelligences" with a great variety of hands-on activities. Check out the M-W-F class page.

Kirkland Preschool

Kirkland Preschool's T-W-Th class is a larger group and slightly older (3½ - 5½) than the Little Friends M-W-F class. It appeals to those children who are very independent and self-motivated, who are comfortable with groups, and who are able to pay attention to others' ideas. This lively class gives students many opportunities to explore creative avenues and social relationships. Field trips offer another way for the children to actively learn.

The T-W-Th class presents "kindergarten readiness skills" as a subtly interwoven foundation of letters, sounds, numbers, and numerals. Language and vocabulary skills are emphasized.

Always, attention is paid to each individual's developmental level. And always, creativity and positive self-image are encouraged. Visit us at the T-W-Th class page.
